Unlike motor shows of past years, IAA Mobility has transformed into a ‘mobility event’ – showcasing everything from cars to electric bicycles and other travel solutions. Nonetheless, many OEMs presented new models and shared their strategic plans during the exhibition.
With that in mind, here’s a quick overview of announcements made by key automakers at the show.
Volkswagen
Volkswagen unveiled the new model VW ID.7 GTX. This electric sedan series now has a more efficient electric motor, as well as changes to the battery and interior.
During the VW press conference, CEO Oliver Blume spoke about the four pillars of their strategy:
- Vehicle architecture
- Battery and charging
- Software
- Mobility solutions
A key part of VW’s strategy is their evolution from OEM into mobility provider.
Renault
Renault presented All New Scenic electric. The 100% electric vehicle is designed with the concept of ‘voiture à vivre’, translated as a ‘car to live in’. This vehicle received a new acoustic system and an electric range of more than 620 km.
BMW
BMW Group shared new models with electrified powertrains, including BMW New Class, BMW i5 and others.
During his presentation, Oliver Zipse, CEO of BMW, said that the company strongly believes that hydrogen vehicles have lots of potential. The Group is focusing on sustainability, digitalisation, and e-mobility.
Opel
The Opel Experimental was premiered at IAA Mobility, and aims to bring Vauxhall-Opel into a new electric chapter. In 2024 every Opel model will be available with battery version and from 2025, Opel will move to an electric vehicle only model.
The OEM also announced that they are aiming to offer an affordable EV in 2026, retailing at 25,000 Euros.
Mercedes
Mercedes is on a journey to net carbon neutrality (a plan dubbed ‘Ambition 2039’ by the OEM) and plans to achieve its goals using a multi-faceted approach of supply chain, production and logistics, well-to-tank, tank-to-wheel and end-of-life.
This year, Mercedes opened a new battery recycling plant in Europe, targeting 40% recycled raw materials in car fleet by 2030, to reduce resource consumption.
